I am working as an..

Please note: CareLinx is the online platform that allows families to become your direct employer. CareLinx is not your employer.

If you are hired by the family as an EMPLOYEE..

CareLinx offers families an easy-to-use tax and free tax preparation service called HomeWork Solutions (HWS), if the family decides to become your direct employer. We encourage families to pick this option, as it is the most seamless process for hiring you onto the family.

What does being hired as an employee mean?

  • FEDERAL INCOME AND STATE INCOME TAXES NOT WITHHELD. You are responsible for these taxes at the end of the year.

  • Certain taxes are withheld from your paycheck. The taxes withheld are FICA taxes (such as Social Security and Medicare) and SDI and other state taxes (varies by state).

  • Unemployment taxes are NOT withheld and the family would be responsible for paying this.

PLEASE NOTE: If FICA taxes are not withheld from your pay, your employer is responsible for them. However, you cannot opt out of them when they are withheld.

  • All withholdings can be viewed in your paystub under the Deductions/Expenses section.

  • Once a family is signed up for HWS, they become your employer and you become their employee.

If you were hired as an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR (1099)..

  • You will get a higher paycheck, because no taxes are withheld.

  • You can deduct business expenses at the end of year!

💡 TIP: We recommend saving at least 10% of your earned wages for end of the year taxes.

You can find them under the Account > Payments tab.

Will I receive a W-2?
Any CareLinx client that has enrolled and signed their enrollment forms with HWS will receive year-end documents, regardless of how much their caregiver earns.

Every caregiver that has wages reported to HWS, will receive a W-2 form. HWS will do the extra work to move the tax money withheld from the Caregiver to federal income taxes, if they do not meet the $2400 threshold.

IMPORTANT: You are always responsible for reporting your wages and filing an income tax return, even if you did not receive a W-2 form.

What should I do if I don't receive my W-2?
Please reach out to the family to see if they signed up with HomeWork Solutions for tax purposes.

If not, you may need to submit a 1099 form and a support member from CareLinx can walk you through the process.
